Pacamor Kubar Bearings is Proud to be an Integral Part of the James Webb Space Telescope

 

The James Webb Space Telescope (sometimes called JWST) is a large, infrared-optimized space telescope. The project is working to a 2018 launch date. Webb will find the first galaxies that formed in the early Universe, connecting the Big Bang to our own Milky Way Galaxy. Webb will peer through dusty clouds to see stars forming planetary systems, connecting the Milky Way to our own Solar System. Webb's instruments will be designed to work primarily in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, with some capability in the visible range.

Webb will have a large mirror, 6.5 meters (21.3 feet) in diameter and a sunshield the size of a tennis court. Both the mirror and sunshade won't fit onto a rocket fully open, so both will fold up and open once Webb is in outer space. Webb will reside in an orbit about 1.5 million km (1 million miles) from the Earth.

Ken:  "As you know for most of our meters we have used your bearings exclusively for a number of years, many are used on air calibrations for all sorts of gases and a large portion are used on liquid cryogenic such as LIN, LOX, LAR, LH2 etc."We used to advise after 3 months to a year that we recommend changing the bearings; several years ago we stopped changing the bearing. We have three people that calibrate and certify the cryogenic flowmeters all over the world, from China to South Africa, to Europe, Brazil as well as in the USA and Canada.

"We have not changed a bearing for years and have had no failures due to bearing wear, as a matter of fact we have found that when we do a repair for other reasons that a new set of bearing has a shift to the K factor, but when we go back to re-certify that the bearing has shifted back exactly to the original K factor which means that all the bearing are exactly the same which is amazing!!"

PKB: "Can you help me understand a little more about the "K factor"? The readers may appreciate some layman language there."

Ken: "The K factor is the number of pulses in a unit of measure I.E. gallons, liters etc. It is obtained by adding the individual K-factors for all the calibration points, typically 12 with the top and bottom points repeated, then divide the total by 12 and the resulting number will be the average K factor or number of pulses per unit. The meter will constantly reproduce this average K-factor for many years. I have included a Calibration Data Sheet and a cutaway of a Hoffer turbine flowmeter."

In an effort to better serve the aerospace market with ever more expedient ball bearing deliveries, Pacamor Kubar Bearings has added the Cincom A32 to its primary turn capabilities, thereby expanding machine capacity and production efficiencies. The Cincom A32 is reputed to be the world's fastest Swiss type CNC automatic Lathe. The new lathe will enable PKB to improve on its uniquely short leadtimes

AerospaceThe A32 is a valuable addition to a growing  manufacturing cell for strategic aerospace projects. Dwight Calkins, PKB Senior Engineer, stated, "PKB is developing the new aerospace manufacturing cell for more and more intricate bearing designs. Some of the products we're now able to produce include shaft and bearing units, angular contact bearings, full complement bearings, special sizes, and many other special features. With the A32, we can respond to all these requests more efficiently and expand our product line while achieving the superior quality demanded by our customers. PKB is entering a new phase in our production capabilities and we're strategically responding to expanded capability requests from the aerospace community." 

The Cincom A32 Type VII is a state-of-the-art Swiss Turning Center that is strong, powerful and rigid for exceptional cutting performance. With features such as a rapid feed rate of 45 m/min, high-speed processing with the latest NC unit and Citizen's unique streamline control, it achieves 30% higher productivity than previous machines.

This 32 mm machine, with its enhanced standard equipment package, provides a production-ready, value-for-the-money manufacturing solution.
